Floral Spotlight: Delphinium

Wedding Cake Inspiration + Trends

I’ve been seeing delphiniums EVERYWHERE lately, and I love it!

It’s such a romantic flower, and it looks beautiful in any season.

My favorite is the pale blue delphinium, but in my own backyard garden, I’m growing some purple-y royal blue delphinium, and those keep catching my eye, too!

This is a flower that stands out in any garden and on any wedding cake.

If you’re looking for a botanically inspired addition to your wedding cake, this is the flower for you! With its tall stature and vibrant colors (so many options!), delphiniums are elegant and whimsical (the best combo imo), beautiful and the perfect choice for your wedding cake.

The Beauty of the Delphinium

Delphiniums stand out for their striking appearance.

They’re tall, proud flowers that you can find in shades of blue, purple, pink, and white. Their vibrant colors and unique structure make them a favorite among gardeners and florists and sugar artists alike.

The name “delphinium” comes from from the Greek word “delphis,” meaning dolphin, because the flower buds resemble the shape of a dolphin’s nose. (Woah?!)

Symbolism and Significance

In the language of flowers, delphiniums symbolize cheerfulness, goodwill, and a sense of levity (a fancy way of saying whimsical, imo)

They are often associated with protection and a new beginning, which makes them pretty perfect for weddings.

Incorporating delphiniums into your wedding cake design adds a layer of symbolism to your celebration and can remind your guests of the joyful occasion for you and your beloved!

Delphinium are also the ‘birth month’ flower for July!

Fun Fact! 🎉 Are delphinium and larkspur different names for the same flower?! I had to do some research on this because I read both yes and no. But the conclusion I was most satisfied with is that “not all flowers that are called larkspur are part of the up to 300 varieties of the delphinium genus.” (Source) So I guess…kinda?

Delphiniums as Sugar Flowers

Delphiniums are like the epitome of the meticulous process required in the art of sugar flower making. They require precision and creativity in both structure and color! I love layering on the vibrant hues, and individually creating every single blossom that trails up the tall delphinium stem.

Real delphiniums are toxic if they’re eaten so I don’t recommend you put them on your cake! Have a sugar version, though, is food safe while still being breathtakingly realistic.

With Sugar Flowers, you won’t lose the stunning visual impact of these flowers, and in fact, you’ll even have the option to save your delphinium sugar flowers to display as keepsakes well after the wedding is over!

Why Delphiniums Are Ideal for Wedding Cakes

Delphiniums are an ideal choice for wedding cakes for so many reasons.

First of all, their tall, elegant stems adds height and drama to any cake design, either creating a focal point or adding depth around another focal flower.

Secondly, their range of colors allows for customization to match any wedding theme or color palette. Whether you’re going for a classic white cake with a pop of color or a bold, vibrant design, delphiniums can be adapted to suit your vision.

And finally, using sugar versions of these flowers ensures that your cake remains safe and edible, as some fresh flowers (like delphinium!) aren’t suitable for direct contact with food.

Incorporating Delphiniums into Your Cake Design

When it comes to incorporating delphiniums into your cake design, the possibilities are endless.

You can opt for a minimalist approach with a few single spikes of delphiniums as a topper or go all out with cascading blooms that wrap around the tiers.

You can pair the delphinium with other sugar flowers like for a lush, garden-inspired look. Here are some of my favorite flowers to pair with delphinium!

Ranunculus

Peonies

Cosmos

Hydrangea

Tulips

Choosing the Right Cake Artist

To bring your delphinium inspired wedding cake to life, make sure you’re working with a cake designer who specializes in sugar flowers.

Look for professionals with experience in creating intricate sugar flower designs and a portfolio that showcases their ability to replicate the delicate beauty of delphiniums.

Discuss your vision with them, and don’t hesitate to ask for a sample or sketch to ensure that your cake will be a true reflection of your style and preferences.

And if your baker or cake designer doesn’t have the experience or ability to recreate your favorite flower, don’t forget you can collaborate with a sugar artist who specializes in sugar flower creation and can collaborate with wedding cake makers!
